Palmer is the borough seat of Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The courthouse serves the largest borough in Alaska by land area. Criminal cases come in from Palmer, Wasilla, Big Lake, Talkeetna, Willow, Sutton, Meadow Lakes, North Lakes, Tanaina, Knik-Fairview, and all unincorporated areas in between. Both the Superior Court (for felonies) and the District Court (for misdemeanors) operate here under one roof.

Because the Mat-Su Borough has grown rapidly over the past few decades, the Palmer courthouse handles a substantial volume of cases. Criminal case types include DUI, domestic violence, theft, drug offenses, assault, and more serious felony charges. The clerk's office staff can direct you to the right records or help with case status questions. If you are looking for older records, ask specifically about archive retrieval, as some older case files may not be immediately on hand.

CourtView at records.courts.alaska.gov is the Alaska Court System's free public case search tool. It is the quickest way to look up any criminal case filed in Palmer. You can search by party name, case number, or citation number. Partial name searches work - you can enter just a last name to get a list of results to review.

CourtView returns charge details, filing dates, case status, hearing schedules, and docket entries for Palmer cases. The database covers criminal, civil, family law, and probate matters. Most cases go back to 1990. The system does not show sealed records or juvenile cases. If you know the case number from a ticket or citation, that is the fastest search method.

CourtView is statewide, so a name search will return results from all Alaska courts, not just Palmer. This is useful if a defendant has had cases in other parts of the state. You can filter results to the Palmer location to narrow your search. The system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and does not require registration or a fee to use.

How to Request Palmer Court Records

To get copies of documents from a Palmer criminal case, contact the clerk's office at (907) 746-8181 or visit in person at 435 South Denali Street. For fax requests, use (907) 746-8180. Include the case number in your request whenever possible. If you do not have the case number, the clerk can search by name, but a research fee of $30 per hour may apply for extended searches.

Standard copy fees apply. Plain copies are $5 for the first document and $3 for each additional document in the same request. Certified copies are $10 for the first document and $3 per additional one. Certified copies carry the court's official seal and confirm the copy is a true reproduction of the original. This type of copy is required for legal proceedings, background check services, and most official uses.

Processing time for standard requests is five to seven business days. Complex requests or archive retrievals may take longer. The court can provide audio recordings of hearings on request. Written transcripts are not prepared by the court - you would need to contract with a private transcription service. For requests from outside Alaska, you can use the Alaska Court System's general records email at recordsfax@akcourts.us.

What Palmer Criminal Records Are Public

Most criminal case records filed in Palmer are public under AS 40.25.110, the Alaska Public Records Act. Available records include criminal complaints, charging documents, bail orders, plea agreements, motions and court orders, sentencing documents, probation conditions, and final judgments. These apply to both misdemeanor cases at the District Court level and felony cases at the Superior Court level.

Certain records are not available to the public. Juvenile criminal cases are sealed. Records sealed by court order are restricted regardless of the charge. Portions of files containing victim identifying information or sensitive witness data may be withheld. Cases that qualify for expungement under AS 12.62.180 may no longer appear in CourtView. Alaska's expungement law covers arrests without charges, acquittals, and dismissed cases in certain circumstances. Not all dismissed cases qualify automatically.

Common criminal records available include DUI case records, domestic violence charging documents, drug possession and distribution cases, assault records, theft cases, and felony indictments. All of these are accessible through CourtView or via a direct request to the Palmer clerk's office.
